Answer engine optimization, explained.
What AEO is, why it is happening now, and how Taurus gets your brand named when someone asks AI who to buy from.
“Best [category] tools for a small team?”
Roundups, review sites, comparison pages and threads it already trusts.
A short paragraph naming two or three products. No page two.
If your evidence is not in those sources, you are not in the answer.
What this is
The category is young enough that most of these questions do not have a settled answer yet. These are ours.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization is the practice of getting your brand named and cited inside the answers AI gives, rather than ranked in a list of blue links. When someone asks ChatGPT “what is the best project management tool for a small agency”, AI returns a short answer naming two or three products. AEO is the work of being one of them.
It overlaps with SEO but optimises for a different outcome. SEO competes for a position on a results page a human will scan. AEO competes for a mention inside a paragraph a model generates — which means the levers are different: what your pages state plainly, what structured data you publish, and which third-party sources the model already trusts in your category.
What is the difference between AEO, GEO and SEO?
AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are used more or less interchangeably for the same discipline: getting cited by AI. SEO remains the practice of ranking in traditional search results.
They are not alternatives. Classic search still drives the large majority of web traffic, and the pages that rank well are frequently the pages AI quotes. AEO is what you add when a growing share of your customers stop clicking through at all.
Why does AEO matter now?
Because the click is disappearing from the top of the funnel. Only 8% of Google searches that show an AI summary produce a click on any result, against 15% of searches without one — and when an AI Overview appears, the top-ranked page loses 58% of its clicks.
Meanwhile customers are actively choosing to ask. Forrester found 94% of business buyers used AI in their most recent buying process, and rated generative AI a more meaningful information source than vendor websites or salespeople. If AI does not name you, you are not in the consideration set — and unlike a search results page, there is no page two to be on.
Which AI platforms should I be tracking?
Taurus tracks ten: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek and Amazon Alexa. All ten are covered on every plan.
They do not agree with each other. It is common for a brand to be named consistently by one AI and never mentioned by another, because each draws on a different mix of sources. Tracking a single platform tells you very little about where you actually stand.
Why this matters now.
The mechanics
What actually determines whether a model names you.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
AI names brands it can find clear, quotable evidence about, from sources they already trust. In practice that means three things: your own pages have to state plainly what you do, who it is for and what it costs; that information has to be structured so a model can extract it without guessing; and independent sources in your category — comparison roundups, review sites, community threads — have to mention you, because that is what AI quotes when it is not quoting you directly.
The single most common reason a brand is invisible is not a technical one. It is that the site never answers, in plain language, the questions customers actually ask before they choose.
How does Taurus measure AI visibility?
We run 120 buying prompts — real questions people ask before choosing in your category — against all ten assistants, and record every answer. For each one we log whether you were named, which competitors were named instead, how AI described you, and which sources it cited to justify the answer.
That produces a baseline you can move: a share-of-answer figure per platform, a named competitor set, and the specific pages and third-party sources that are winning the mentions you want.
How long does it take to see results?
Faster than SEO, because you are changing what a model can find and cite rather than waiting on a ranking algorithm to re-crawl and re-weight. Changes to your own pages can be reflected within weeks.
How much movement you get, and how quickly, depends on how competitive your category is and how much independent coverage already exists about you. We would rather give you a realistic read on a call, against your actual category, than publish an average that would be wrong for most people who read it.
Does AEO replace SEO?
No, and anyone selling it that way is overreaching. Classic organic search still accounts for the overwhelming majority of web traffic; AI referrals, though growing extremely fast, remain a small fraction of total visits.
What has changed is the quality of that fraction. AI-referred traffic to retail sites grew 393% year over year and now converts 42% better than other sources — a reversal from a year earlier, when it converted worse. It is a small channel that is compounding, and it is cheap to establish a position in now precisely because most competitors have not.
What are AI ads?
AI has begun carrying paid placements in and around their answers. Taurus sets up and manages campaigns across ChatGPT, Google's AI surfaces, Microsoft Copilot and Reddit — the last because it is one of the most heavily cited sources across every major AI.
Paid placement and organic citation work on the same buying questions, which is why we plan them together rather than treating ads as a separate channel.
The practical part
Pricing, scope and what you actually receive.
How much does AEO cost?
Platform starts at $499 a month and gives your team the whole toolkit: prompt research, visibility monitoring, AI-optimized articles, traffic analytics and AI Ads. Done-for-You is $899 a month and we run all of it for you. Enterprise is scoped to your portfolio. Full detail is on the pricing page.
Every engagement begins with a visibility report on your own category, because nobody should commit to a plan for a problem they have not seen measured yet.
What do I actually get in the report?
A written report covering where you appear across all ten assistants, which competitors are named in your place and what evidence backs them, how AI describes your brand in their own words, which sources they trust in your category, and a prioritized list of what to change — ordered by what will move first.
It is written to be handed to whoever runs your site. You do not need a developer to interpret it, and you are not required to buy anything to act on it.
Do I have to talk to someone to get started?
No. The report is requested from the form on the homepage — four fields. We run your category and come back the same working day.
If you would rather talk it through first, you can book a call instead. Plans are always scoped on a call, against what the report actually found.
Do you work with agencies?
Yes. Agencies run every client from one account and hand over a report under their own name. Terms are on the agency page.
